ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR UK RESIDENTS

UK residents wishing to marry in Kenya can have either a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony. No marriages are conducted between 22 December and 05 January.

Civil Ceremony

This is held at the local registrar office or any other venue provided it has a special license. Ensure you inquire about the venue before obtaining a special license.

Religious ceremony

Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Traditional African weddings are recognized under Kenyan law. The registrar does not usually record Islamic, Hindu and Traditional African weddings. Marriage certificates are issued at the end of the ceremony in the case of Islamic or Hindu marriage ceremonies. Affidavits are sworn in the case of African customary marriages.

If wishing to have a church ceremony, contact the church where you wish to get married to enquire about the necessary religious paperwork.

Notice of intention of marriage at the church and office of the Registrar of marriages should be given 21 days before. If this is not possible, apply for a special license if intending to marry in a registrar office or any other venue.

To apply for a special license, contact the Registrar of Marriages in advance. If granted, couples need only arrive in Kenya Four (4) working days in advance of their wedding day in order to finalize paperwork.

Marriage certificate

Ensure you are issued with a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Contact the Registrar of marriages in advance to ensure marriage is registered in Kenya.

Visitors can get married during their stay Kenya.
Once in the country, they should apply for a special license at the department of Registrar General (Marriage Section) Sheria House. The registration can only be done in person.
